The Coop was thrilled to help break ground July 29 on the new Discovery Center at Mass Audubon’s Long Pasture Wildlife Sanctuary in Barnstable.

The $1.7 million Discovery Center will be an energy-efficient addition that “incorporates all-person accessibility and outdoor gathering spaces as well as easy access to Barnstable Harbor,” according to Long Pasture’s website.

“We’re thrilled to support the build of the new center,” said Lisa Oliver, President and CEO, during the groundbreaking that was livestreamed. “The sanctuary is such an asset to the community. The new Discovery Center will allow even more people to access this beautiful property and enjoy what it means to be in nature.”

In addition to being a corporate sponsor of the Long Pasture Wildlife Sanctuary, the Bank and The Coop Foundation have given more than $22,000 for the new building this year.

“We’re not only supporters, but we’re clients, too,” said Oliver, who frequents the sanctuary for guided kayak excursions and walks. In 2019, The Coop’s senior leadership team spent the day at the sanctuary and participated in a lesson on the tidal flats. “Now more than ever, nature has played a more important role in everyone’s life. Nature is the place we go to take a deep breath and have some sort of normalcy.”
