JoMama’s New York Bagels

In celebration of National Small Business Month, we’ll be shining a spotlight on some of our local small business clients. What do they do, what challenges do they face, what gets them most excited and what are the risks they’ve taken? Today, we caught up Samuel Bennison, owner of JoMama’s New York Bagels in Chatham.Samuel Bennison, owner of JoMama's New York Bagels in front of the store

What is your business?
My business is a fast-paced breakfast/lunch restaurant serving high-grade, organic coffee and specializing in New York bagels (boiled in Queens, NY, and baked in our ovens daily).

How and when did you get started?
The company was formed twelve years ago by Rick and Christy Bourgea with the Orleans location. Five years ago, they opened the Chatham location. In May of 2018 they started the franchise process, selling me the Chatham location. Another franchisee and previous coworker of mine just opened another location in Yarmouth on April 1st.

I got started working in a franchise setting when I was fifteen, my first job being at McDonald’s. I then continued to manage kitchens on Cape Cod. Prior to the purchase of JoMama’s, I was the store manager.

What’s the most challenging part of running your business?
The most challenging aspect is my schedule and not running out of steam after working in the hot kitchen before getting the finances done after close.

What’s the biggest risk you took in your business?
I invested everything to purchase the restaurant, putting aside personal debt and desires to come up with enough capital.

Are there any community partnerships or initiatives you’d like people to know about?
We like to partner with local companies with things like sponsorships, town events, community donations and catering. We currently host the coach of the Chatham Anglers (Cape Cod Baseball League) for breakfast and coffee every morning, and also provide food for the players before games.

Any fun facts about the business you’d like to share?
One interesting factoid that throws people for a loop when they meet me is that I am only twenty-three and am able to run a very busy restaurant.
